My Next Project & My Stint In Jail

Excited: My next AmeriCorps NCCC project has been announced. We will be going to Colorado Springs, getting red-card trained, working on wildfire mitigation in the Pike's Peak area, and living on our own floor of a correctional institution.

I've always wanted to do a short stint in jail.

Project # 27

Organization Mission/Description
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office evolved with the creation of El Paso County, which was one of the original 17 counties created with the Colorado Territory in 1861. Now in our 150th year, the duties of the Sheriff’s Office go far beyond traditional law enforcement activities. The mission of the Emergency Services Division includes many of these activities, including search and rescue, hazardous material response, fire investigation, emergency management, forest and prairie fire suppression, and wildland-urban interface (WUI) mitigation. Wildfire is a major priority of the Division, because of its great potential for loss of life and property, as witnessed during the Waldo Canyon Fire in 2012. Forest and prairie fire suppression is also one of the Sheriff’s statutory obligations.

Compelling Need
Wildfire is a major priority of the Division, because of its great potential for loss of life and property, as witnessed during the Waldo Canyon Fire in 2012. Forest and prairie fire suppression is also one of the Sheriff’s statutory obligations. To meet this requirement, our Division manages the all-volunteer El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Wildland Fire Crew.

NCCC Role
The team will be trained as wildland firefighters, according to the national professional standards established by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG). Once trained, the team will do double-duty as a fire suppression hand crew, attacking new fires under the command of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Wildland Fire Crew. The NCCC team will reduce the chance of a catastrophic fire by thinning some of these overcrowded forests. The project will also improve the long-term forest health of these lands, and create examples of good forest stewardship.

Housing:
The team will be housed in dormitories and this facility recently underwent a complete remodel. The area is in brand new condition, and has only been used by AmeriCorps teams in 2011 and 2012. The units include separate partitioned sleeping areas (more than 50 beds, total) and separate bathrooms/showers (multiple users) for men and women. Two coin operated laundries are located within 1.5 miles of the dorm. The dormitory is located in downtown Colorado Springs.

Additional Team Considerations:
El Paso County has an all-volunteer wildland crew so the need for this fire management project is very high.
